Rhino Best Practices: A Guide for November

One of the secrets to finishing Naplwrimo is to get ahead. We've compiled a list of Rhino Best Practices to help guide you through the month and take advantage of the burst of energy that comes at the beginning of the event.

  • Go to the forums and introduce yourself to one other playwright. Find out what you have in common (maybe you live in the same region or the same city), discuss your favorite playwrights or what inspires you. Try to do this everyday.

  • Go to the forums and find a playwright who has either finished Naplwrimo or participated in the marathon before. Ask them for advice.

  • Participate in the forums. Share stories, commiserate, offer advice or support.

  • Bookmark The tracking page. This page is your friend. It displays all new posts in the Naplwrimo forums and on the site in one convenient menu. Stay in the loop without having to browse the site for hours. You’re here to write after all, and we know that!

  • Read Dan's Failproof Advice on Winning Naplwrimo.

  • Follow the 7 Rules of the Rhino.

  • Don’t let anyone tell you there are rules. Follow your own rules. You're a Rhino. Own it.

  • Connect with us on Twitter and Facebook.

  • Save your wrists from Repetitive Strain Injury and install the free program WorkRave to help you remember to stretch and take breaks.

  • If you’re on the fence about signing up, try this: write a scene between your inner critic and you writer self. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write. Once you’re done, choose (never decide) what you’re going to do.

  • After you’ve chosen (again, never decide), commit yourself for the month and write 3 pages. It doesn’t have to be the beginning of your play. Just write 3 pages. Any 3 pages. If you don’t know where to start in your play, make a list of all the things you do know about the play you want to write. Keep writing. You’ll be surprised how much you already know about the play you want to write.

  • Call, Facebook, Twitter or email 3 people you know (and that you know are supportive of your creative endeavors (don’t pick your saboteurs, you know who they are…) and let them know you’re doing Naplwrimo.

  • Write, write, write!! Get your pages done!

What do I do when I have 75 pages ?

It's getting close to winning time and several of you have already won.

Congratulations to our winners !!! I am slowly adding you to the 2008 Hall of Fame page and once December 1st comes, you'll be able to download your fancy winner certificate.

If you are a winner, your play must be uploaded to the site no later then 11:59pm on November 30th.

Here are the instructions on how to upload your play : ( you can also find them in the FAQ section of the site)

First, you need to be logged in to the site to upload your play. After you're logged in, you should see a menu in one of the columns on the right side of the home page. The column should have your user name at the top of it in caps.
It should look something like this :
USER NAME HERE

Click on "Play" and it will take you to the page where you can upload your play. If you already created a page for your play when NaPlWriMo started, just go and edit that page. Once you get to the play creation page ( it should say CREATE PLAY at the top), there will be instructions on how to upload your play. Please read them carefully and follow the instructions. If you are still having trouble , email us and we will help you out.
Note: if you created a page for your play at the beginning of Naplwrimo, your play will automatically be public when you upload it. If you want it to be for your eyes only, email us and we'll change that for you.
Thank you for your patience as we are working on an easier way to set play securities for future years.
Once your play is uploaded, you can go back to that page at any time and add revisions or delete and reupload a more updated file. You can also change the security level on your play at any time by emailing us.
We kindly ask that you do not upload plays that were not written during NaPlWriMo. Thank you.

Post Tracker.

Just wanted to remind you that the recently posted page is your friend. It will show you everything that's been posted to the site since you last visited.  The forums currently don't have the ability to email you when someone responds to your post or thread so this is probably the easiest way to check on the forums. There is much improvement to be done on the NaPlWriMo in the coming years and we know that, but only by your sticking around, will we be able to implement all these new features and ideas. Thanks for being here.
