NaPlWriMo 2011 Rhino Burst #1: There's Still Time

Rhino Bursts* are written specifically for the community by people we deem worthy of rallying Rhinos with the magic of their words. Rhino Bursts offer inspiration, advice, and that extra bit of juice we need as we focus on getting out that first draft.

*A burst is the sound that an adult rhino makes, though it is barely audible to human ears. A baby rhino on the other hand makes a squeak.

Our first burst is from a fellow Rhino, Colleen Hughes.

Congrats, Rhinos! We’ve made it through week one! Throughout the first week, I hope you were able to get started and learn some more about your characters or their stories along the way. And if you’re feeling lost, don’t worry! There’s still plenty of time to figure out where your characters are taking you.

I’m currently feeling a combination of excitement to keep writing and stress at the idea of keeping up this pace. But what makes this month so great is that we don’t have to face the challenge alone. The Forums really are a wonderful place. Have you done your Weekly Check-In yet? I strongly encourage you do so if you haven’t. It’s a great way to keep in touch with the community and see the progress everyone else is making. It’s also one of the ways I keep myself motivated. Knowing that there’s a group of people I’ll be telling my progress to makes me more eager to keep going. On that note, I also should mention that I love the Daily Check-Ins too and totally recommend dropping by once a day. Even if you haven’t been able to write, the community is there to support you and offer encouragement. Sometimes if I’m sitting at my computer and dreading getting started, I’ll let myself pop over to the website and check out the Daily Check-Ins to see how everyone else is doing. After that I tell myself that I can’t post anything until after I work on my play. Of course, there’s also days where the writing is just not going to happen. I still like to check in on those days because I feel like it keeps me in touch with the community, which fuels my excitement to keep going. So much of playwriting, or any type of writing, is spent alone, and I love that this month provides a welcome break from that.

So let’s take all the initial excitement we had in the first few days of Naplwrimo and carry it with us into week two! I know all too well that sometimes once the novelty of starting a new project wears off, it can be harder to stay motivated, but the community is here to make sure that doesn’t happen. We’re all going through the same struggles and the same breakthroughs. So come on over to the forums to celebrate, commiserate, or motivate. And good luck heading into week two! We can do this!

Greetings from the 2009 Forums Moderator!

Greetings, Rhinos!

My name is Toni Wilson and I go by the handle SolarCircleGirl. I am your Forums Moderator for National Playwriting Month 2009. We're starting up November 1 at the stroke of midnight , and I hope that you will be joining us again this year.

I’d like to introduce myself: I'm 34 years old, I've been a playwright for 10 years, and I've had two plays published by Heuer Publishing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I went to the University of Iowa and graduated in 2005 with a degree in theatre. I live in Conway, Arkansas, with my fiance, Bill, and our three cat-children, Newton, Cheby and Nibbler. I work at a local hospital as a food service supervisor.

Iowa to Arkansas is a bit of a strange trip, and there's an odd story to it. I met Bill on Eharmony and when he got a job in Conway, Arkansas, teaching at Hendrix (he's got a Ph.d in mathematics), I decided to go with him. It's been an adventure moving here after living in the Midwest my whole life, but it's been the best thing I could have done for my writing.

I enjoy the works of Paula Vogel, Nilo Cruz, Noah Haidle ('Mr. Marmalade'), Chekhov, Shakespeare, Karl Capek, Caryl Churchill, Neil LaBute, and Naomi Wallace, among others. I haven't read a lot of her work, but Suzan-Lori Parks has been a huge influence on me. She came to Hendrix and spoke in conjunction with performances of her '365 Days/365 Plays' project. I had just moved here, was completely alone, a stranger in my own country, and I was drowning, creatively and personally. Hearing her speak about her project and being washed over with everything that is just her (and if you've seen her speak, you know what I'm talking about) saved my life. The next day, I wrote a new scene for a new play. And the next. And the next. I did it for four months straight until I was cast in a play and couldn't keep up with it. I came up with enough new material, that, two years later, I am still working on plays from my own personal project.

National Playwriting Month is right around the corner…. If you are going to participate this year, keep an eye out for the forums where there will be a thread to post what you think your piece is going to be. If you have no idea, that’s okay too. Just tell us you’ll be there. You can’t write before November 1st but you can certainly think about your play. Give us details on the play, plot, characters or tell us how you feel about doing Naplwrimo this year…

I am excited for this year in my new role and I can’t wait to see you there and write a play alongside with you.

If you have any questions or need information or clarifications on anything, don't hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to seeing you in November!

 Onward, Rhinos!

Just wanted to remind you that the recently posted page is your friend. It will show you everything that's been posted to the site since you last visited.  The forums currently don't have the ability to email you when someone responds to your post or thread so this is probably the easiest way to check on the forums. There is much improvement to be done on the NaPlWriMo in the coming years and we know that, but only by your sticking around, will we be able to implement all these new features and ideas. Thanks for being here.
