Countdown: N-2 days: Don't Lose the One of You That Exists in All Time
“There is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.” — Martha Graham
I first encountered this quote when I was in Acting I in college. Our professor--bless her heart--attempted to guide us in the ways of acting--but clearly the majority of our class had other things in mind. There was a day where everyone just DIDN'T do the homework and she laid into us--not in a mean, yelly way, but in that stern disappointed way. She was going to make actors out of us heathens if she died trying.
This quote came the first day, and has stuck with me this whole time.
It's true--if you do NOT give yourself this opportunity to say what your play wants you to say, you will lose this unique expression.
Think of it this way: what would the world be like if Shakespeare decided to not write (or, I guess whoever wrote Shakespeare if he didn't)? What would the world be like if Queen decided to not record 'Bohemian Rapsody'? Surely William Shatner would not have been able to cover it. What if Fellini had decided that watching his country's version of 'Law and Order' was more important?
I know these are silly examples, but still, do you want to lose that?
