The Rhino Rebellion Continues

By nytheatremike - Posted on 10 November 2010

As you all know, I'm rebelling my first year here: working on a finishing a first draft I started about a month ago. And it's going swimmingly, overall. Just cracked 80 pages after getting over my first major hump of the whole process. I wrote out a basic outline, so I generally know where I want this thing to go, but I keep surprising myself with what comes up. More and more my daily writing habit is turning into me typing something, then looking at it and happily thinking, "Who wrote that? Certainly not me. Because that's pretty good." This playwriting business is becoming habit-forming. But, I'm digging it.

Yep, that's theatre for you. The writing is addicting, and the process of having your play performed and seeing all the people working so hard on your script and loving it and making it come alive are all reasons I really became a theatre major in the first place.

Good to hear that your rebellion is going along well! And it's a wonderful feeling when you write something and then see how good it is. I think more of us need to have the mindframe of 'I'm good' rather than 'I suck'. It's a balance--if you think you're perfect you will NEVER improve and you will not be open to suggestions or critiques and probably will be terrible to work with. If you think you suck completely you will probably never write. It's good to know when you're good but to realize you always will improve as you write more, and it's good to know when you stink, because that's part of the editing process of being able to listen to what the play needs.
