Day 21: Saturday November 21

Well, at this point I'm swimming in a sea of 35 pages.

It's a loosly drafted 2/3s of a story line studded with great monologues, a couple different breaks from the rythm with new conventions (such as  repetition and a scene involving anthropomorphized sanwiches singing a rap).

I actually feel good about the raw material being produced. The real question just keeps coming back to:  "Great. I've got lots of different bits and pieces. Now what story am I telling?" And I think I'm slowly getting a hang of it. It's a delicate process however, especially now that workplce sexual harrasment is coming into the picture. There's probably nothing more difficult to write than the subtlety of sexual violation.

Here are my next big goals:

Make sure my main character (who is also awfully closed off ) gets a chance to let go and do something crazy ... if she wants.

Make sure every character is really accounted for in a rich and truthful way.

Get an arc going.

Have been wondering how my rehabbing American footballer would rejoin his team. His ex-teammates will welcome him with footballs in their hands.

I had a character once who would NOT open up. It was kind of part of this character's deal to not be forthcoming with her feelings or her past, and would lie about things like that. I just couldn't believe she wouldn't even trust the person her story was coming through. Eventually I got her to talk, but it was a hard won battle. Good for your breakthrough! Yay!

Yeah, I'm having the same problem. I've gotten to 40 pages, and that's about it. I don't think I can stretch it 25 more pages. I don't want to put fluff in it. Good luck with getting to the proper page length, but don't feel bad if your play falls short. You still wrote a whole draft, even if it's not 75 pages long!

I was obsessed with 'Laugh'In' when I was like 10 or 11,especially Edith Ann. I was thinking I might be dating myself, but the I realized that I was watching it when I was 10 or 11 back in 85, so you know...

The truth is, I hit 50 pages 52 to be exact, and I just don't see how I'm going to get another 23 pages.  I need to connect the dots from where I am to the ending I've already written, but it seems that I could just do that right now.  There is one more character that I could do more with, so I guess I'll fixate on him and see how that helps.

Good day. Good writing. Real breakthrough with one of my characters, discovered something about him I'd never known previously. It explains a lot!
