Day 19: Thursday, November 19th

By solarcirclegirl - Posted on 18 November 2009

Hello, Rhinos! I hope the 19th day of NaPlWriMo is treating you well.

If you're anything like me, sometimes you might not think you can do ANYTHING with five, ten or fifteen minutes. But if the following possibly insane people can do what they have done in five, ten or fifteen minutes, you can do some writing.

5 minutes

Butter
7 quarter-pound sticks, salted butter
5 minutes
Don Lerman

Pickles, Sour
2.99 pounds
5 Minutes
Cookie Jarvis

10 minutes

Corn Dogs
12 Fletcher's Corny Dogs/ State Fair of Texas
10 minutes/ Sept. 28, 2003
Richard LeFevre

Brats
58 Johnsonville Brats / Brat Days
10 Minutes/ Aug. 5, 2006
Takeru Kobayashi

15 minutes

Cow Brains
57 (17.7 pounds)
15 minutes
Takeru Kobayashi

24" Pizza
7 1/2 Extra Large Bacci Pizza Slices
15 Minutes/ July 9, 2005
Richard LeFevre

Take a notepad with you wherever you go and if you have a minute, jot down some things. Have a rote job to do? Think about your play, whatever you're dealing with that's just sticking in your craw.

And thank your lucky stars you don't have to eat COW BRAINS in 15 minutes.

Let us know how it's going! If you have any good five, ten or fifteen minute work stories from this NaPlWriMo, please share. It might just be the extra push someone else needs to hear.

So, I had a goal of 36 pages to write by this Sunday...today is Thursday and I have written a total of 7 new pages. Now, I would be more discouraged by this count except for the fact that these new pages include an awesome comedic rap number involving sanwiches dancing and rapping their hearts out while being wrangled by a dominatrix sandwich worker.

As you can see, I went with #1 on 'things to try' by Mead Hunter. "BE WRECKLESS." And, it may just be getting me somewhere....

Fifteen minutes is enough time to have a good cry.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Ah, that's better.

Five pages or bust!

My favorite short-time past-time is to read a work in the same style as my play.  For example, I'm writing a whodunit, so I've been enjoying some Sherlock Holmes.  It just keeps the atmosphere in my brain related to what I'm writing, even if I'm not writing.  It also helps me to remember not to forget tone as I'm focused on plot and/or character.

A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships are for.

Do you any idea how hard it is to find records for 5, 10, and 15 minutes? This was about the only thing i could reliably find without reading the Book of World Records.

And this is, indeed, disgusting.

Off to the Arizona State Thepsian festival today. I'll be teaching four playwriting workshops as well as manning a table for my company Theatrefolk. Busy, busy. I'm actually, for a change, looking forward to my long flight today. Lots of time for writing and NO distractions!

Moving on to a new set of collection scenes for re-writes. Keep moving forward!
