introductions?
I hope that this is allowed, if not, it can be deleted. How about a round of introductions?
My name is Toni. I'm located in Conway, Ar. I work at a hospital during the day and am in school for my certified dietary management certificate. I also do roller derby.
I've been a playwright for eight years. I really enjoy Paula Vogel, Shakespeare, Tony Kushner, David Henry Hwang, Anna Devere Smith, Suzan-Lori Parks....the list goes on forever.
Hello to everyone out there. I am looking forward to spending the next month with you all working on my play. :)

Hello Hello Hello!
Very excited to tackle the monster this year! Gearing up and am full of ideas....hope they all come together into something semi coherent! :-)
Wow. Good for you for tackling something that is very much a part of your current reality. That is brave.
Go Rhino, go !
Hi Josh! Thanks for your post. Hi everyone else. Are we all rhinos now? Is that how this goes? Anyway, I love what Josh said about collaboration. It does seem like we're all "around" each other for this plunge. And theatre is about collaboration.
This month is about NO EXCUSES for me and this challenge is the perfect opportunity.
I'm in Los Angeles in the neighborhood of Silver Lake writing a play about people loses their houses while my husband and I (in reality) fight to keep ours.
Day job: I'm currently an accounting temp for a real estate development company
Favorite Playwright? I love Martin McDonagh and Tennessee Williams and Paula Vogel and Harold Pinter and so many more.... I can't name one favorite.
Stephanie
So awesome that you're here ! Life is too short to be reasonable, right ?
Go Rhino, go !
Sarah Ruhl rocks!! And August: Osage County is coming to London....I take it you would recommend I see it? :)
I'm Philippa. I'm an Australian writer based in London. I had never heard of NaPlWriMo until a friend emailed the link to me at literally the eleventh hour on October 31st. I hesitated a little but decided to take the plunge!! Who knows - the way I see it, I'll at least have something to work with by the end of the month, worst case scenario!
I have been writing plays (well, writing, period!) for as long as I can remember. When I was 19 and in second year university, I won a one-act play competition and had my entry performed as part of the open season that year. It also toured the state as part of a national drama festival. It was quite an amazing experience, one I'm sad to say I didn't take full advantage of at the time. But it certainly gave me a taste for seeing my work on stage. Fast forward to 2007 and I moved to London to concentrate more on writing and to have adventures and travel and just live the life I've always wanted. I'm finding it more inspiring than I could have hoped. In addition to plays, I also write poetry and have been published in several magazines in London since I arrived. I'm also working on a novel - well, a few actually (I have a start-stop-forget cycle that I really need to break!)
I have so many favourite playwrights, all of whom inspire me in different ways. I'm reading Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House at the moment. I saw Dead Man's Cell Phone in Washington DC last year and was enthralled by it. Most recent theatre I saw, that was so inspiring, was an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's De Profundis on at the National Theatre. Also saw La Cage Aux Folles on Thursday. Brilliant!! Seeing live theatre leaves me starry-eyed and brimming with inspiration. I always have to seek a quiet warm place to write afterwards, be it in a coffee shop that's still open or the rattling tube (train) home......
Anyway, I'm excited to be here! Looking forward to getting to know you all. Reading about you all has made me feel very inspired!!
It only took two seconds for me to fix it... it's my own fault for being too indecisive to pick a subject line originally. :)
Hello all. I just wanted to say HELLO! and that from reading all that is already on this website, I am truly inspired. The hardest thing I face as a playwright is the isolation in the beginning, as I really like being around people. Which, in turn, is why I write for the theater because I kinda live to collaborate. So having all of you "around" while beginning a play - that's just fantastic.
wishing everyone well from Astoria, NY,
josh
p.s. oh, and I feel I should respond in a similar way to the other folks so, I do web design to make money, as well as work at the tour desk at Lincoln Center. I have worked at The Dramatists Guild, Actors Fund and Primary Stages here in NY and, at the moment, my favorite playwright is Adam Bock. YAY PLAYWRITING!
You can do it. Go, baby, go!
-Joshua
You might be crazy, but welcome to NaPlWriMo anyway!
-Joshua
Thanks anyway, Chris! Welcome back!
-Joshua
Hey all!
I'm Chris Leyva and this is my third NaPlWriMo! I love the anxiety and adrenaline of this! I'm originally from Albuquerque, NM and now live in Columbus, OH. (I have very few connections to the theatre scene, Josh. Most of the people I knew with theatres had their companies collapse and disappear.)
I have an MFA from Iowa and always fall back on the work of Caryl Churchill, Tony Kushner, Brecht, and Shakes. My favorite plays are "Hamlet," "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" by Peter Nichols, and "Far Away."
I'm glad that there are so many of us doing this!
Call me crazy. My husband is, but I look at this as some kind of wierd stress relief. I'm writing this month while putting my Christmas play on it's feet at a Dinner Theatre north of Seattle. (Baylight Dinner Theatre at Lights of Christmas at Warm Beach Christian Camp www.warmbeach.com). My play going up is "A Christmas Circus".
I have my MFA in performance and playwrighting from CalArts. My undergrad from Northwestern College, Orange City, IA. I have been working in theatre as a actor, writer, director, and drama educator for about 16 years not counting college days.
My influences are many, but I love Shakespeare and Brecht. Many modern playwrights I love. I just saw "The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabbler" at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and thought it was wonderful written by the same guy who wrote Ave. Q (the book to it). Sorry, blanking on his name.
Must get ready for rehearsal tomorrow and then oh yeah, start writing another play! Good luck to everyone. I have a half an hour to find what I'm writing about I guess...
Hi, I'm Amy -- writing a series of plays. I've started the first so for NaPlWriMo I'm writing the second. I'm 37, mom of 3, wife for 16 years, my 12 year old daughter has challenged me to have a play on stage within a year (September 30, 2009) so I'd better get cracking. I also have two boys, ages 15 and 5. I also work 25 hours a week and I'm props manager for the latest play at our community theatre so I am very busy but still hoping to get Brigid Kildare's Steel Works written this month.
Hi to all.

so... off the fence yet ?
Go Rhino, go !
Yes. There is a little thing called fear of failure that usually comes and stops most of us from finishing what we start. That's part of why I started this thing... So we can all embrace it at the same time . Welcome and enjoy !
Go Rhino, go !
Oh Josh, we *have* been international since the beginning. I am French, remember ? End of snark.
Um, someone was saying something about snarky playwrights ?
Go Rhino, go !
Colleen....yes... that feature is annoying. I am trying to figure out how to turn it off so it doesn't do that, but at the moment, it's just the way it is. Have Fun !
Go Rhino, go !
Dusty, tell them about your facebook playwrights group when you blog !
Go Rhino, go !
Hells yes Vampire Cowboys!
Ohio University folks kicking kung-fu zombie Hamlet ass!
Thank you! I got lucky with getting into a program close enough to still try to live together on the weekends and over breaks. Boston is great... I'd lived there my entire life up until late August, when we moved two hours west to be close to UMass Amherst. This is right around the time of year where it starts to get dark and cold for months on end, but I still love it. Definitely visit your friend if you can. :)
hey, colleen! Congrats on grad school. I am kind of in the same situation you are in, except in Arkansas. My boyfriend teaches Math at Hendrix College and I followed him here.
I've definitely considered grad school in playwriting. I got sucked into a couple websites yesterday for low-res programs. I need to stop that until at LEAST I get done with my CDM!
One of my best friends in the world, Trisha, moved to Boston earlier this year and she loves it. I am totally planning on visiting her at some point. She makes it sound amazing.
Welcome and see you on the flip side.
welcome, Sonia!
Singapore? Wow! We ARE international now.
No snarky playwrights here. Actually, I'm really snarky, but not here. Welcome!
-Joshua
wecome, venky!
Awesome! Welcome to NaPlWriMo 2008!!
-Joshua
Thanks! And my colorist thanks you as well! ;)
Hi everyone! My name is Colleen, and I'm originally from Boston... currently living out in Western Mass. where my fiance is in his first semester of a PhD program in chemistry. I work from home as a copyeditor for a scientific journal, and I'm also taking a graduate English class.
I gradauated from Holy Cross in 2004 with a BA in English and Theatre, and I wrote my first play as my senior thesis. Last year I applied to MFA playwriting programs (trying to confine myself to New England because the fiance's program is here). I got into Boston University, but I'm deferring a year because of the finanical situation and starting in fall '09. I haven't had much time to write lately between adjusting to working from home and the class I'm taking, so I'm hoping that having the motivation of the community will help me. I was hesitant to sign up because I'm not sure if I'll have enough free time to finish, but I figured I might as well go for it.
It's hard to narrow down a list of my favorite writers... I've always loved Shakespeare. I feel like I've been influenced by Brecht, Beckett, Pirandello, and anything playing with expressionism or theatre of the absurd is always fun. I don't know if what I attempt to write will end up being in one of those styles or not, but we'll see.
(Note to self: If you don't enter a subject line, it auto-inserts your first line of text as the subject... edited to fix that.)
Keep at it JAGSTAR--I think the more you write, the easier it gets.
(And love your hair!)

Glad I found you all. You all seem like such a friendly supportive bunch. No snarky playwrights.
This is my first full length in a very long while. (I write a lot of 10-minute plays). Some of my fellow writers were beginning to wonder if I could write a full length play...phew! So glad that you started this. Came at the perfect time for me. It's 2am here in Singapore and am already underway!
Good luck everyone!
Much love,
Dean

Hey everyone! I'm an actress and singer in NY and now I guess I'd like to be considred a writer as well :) After writing pretty much my whole life (without finishing anything, I think I have commitment issues, lol), I finally finished the 1st draft of my first play about two weeks ago. Three months ago I decided I didn't want to wait around for anyone to give me an acting job so I created a role for myself. I have no idea if its any good or if I have any more inspiration to write right now after finishing that play, but I'd like to try!!!!
Anyway, I'm excited to be here and I'll try my best to come up with something. At least it will get me thinking and hopefully creating something! And its great to be "introduced" to all of you!
Happy Halloween! And happy writing!
It's about a women's rec level hockey team with lots of songs about hockey, sex, etc. and a sappy love story of course - it IS a musical.
Roller derby musical? Hmmmmmmmm
You could call it "Jammer!"

You know Sherrine Azab...who is directing a one act of mine as we speak. She mentioned one of her friends got into Youngblood- and that must be you! Good to meet you...as much as you can actually "meet" anyone over the internet. Also, small ass world, no?
Yeah, we're not really sure who will actually "see" the show is all. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

You have a fabulous taste in playwrights!
Welcome, Hannah!

Hiya, Daniel! I wonder if we know each other from around "the scene" as I'm a Brooklyn boy too.
Anyway, welcome to NaPlWriMo 2008!!!
-Joshua
You have plenty of hours in the day to write a full-length play. Just give up those four to eight hours you've been sleeping and get to a computer!
Seriously though, welcome.
-Joshua
Glad to have you aboard! I'm Josh, the forums moderator. Welcome!

Hello, My name is Venky from India. So, add one more international person to the list.
I've got a couple of plays under my belt. Although I haven't really had time to write since I started my current job which takes up mad amounts of time.
I don't have a plan in mind, I don't have a draft. I don't have an outline. I don't have a clue this time round.
Let's see where that takes me...
I'm a member of the thick skin club. I like my critiques, if any, hard and to the point.
I love that we are really International now. Welcome !
Go Rhino, go !
And Karen is one of our bloggers too this year !!!
:)
Go Rhino, go !
Welcome ! There are a few of you Australian fellows on here ! :)
Go Rhino, go !
Hello everyone,
Wow, you are a sociable bunch. I'm Sonia and I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland. Having long harboured a deep nagging itch to write a play, I am now going to set aside my dozen notebooks of half-done scripts and actually finish something. Hooray! Whilst most people dream of getting a play produced, my dream is to make it through to a third draft. 'Procrastinator' doesn't even scratch the surface. Who knew there was so much stuff that could fill your day?
I did write a musical a few years ago that was on for a month or so in London, but it would be great to create a piece that doesn't involve the heroine bursting into song every five minutes. Lets see if I can resist the urge (tap dancing prisoners-of-war, anyone?)
Favourite playwrights would have to be David Hare and Peter Shaffer. To be honest, I'm amazed that I want to write plays at all given that I grew up very close to Stratford in England (the birthplace of Shakespeare) where it is compulsory for schools to club you round the head with The Merchant of Venice every five minutes. Still, I do retain a fondness for the big man, despite the bruising.
24 hours and 31 minutes to go...
Be careful what you wish for, they say !
You ask for community .. you get it ! :)
Go Rhino, go !
