Young Playwrights... UNITE!

By Precious - Posted on 01 November 2009

Yeah, I'm a sixteen year old aspiring playwright and I'm wondering if there are any others competing this year...

Not sure if you'll see this, but wow, I'm jealous that you have that much playwriting/drama exposure in high school. It sounds like a great program. Drama was kind of a joke at my high school, with just one big spring musical each year that usually involved the hockey team being convinced to play most of the male roles.

The only playwriting experience I got in college was as independent study when I did my honors thesis. (There was a playwriting tutorial offered, but the only year I could take it was when the professor who offered it was on sabbatical.) So I still feel pretty new at this whole thing myself even though I'm five years out of college. :)

I hope you keep at it... I know there's festivals and things for playwrights who are under 18, so definitely keep an eye out for them. Maybe I'll cross-post some of this in your "New Playwrights" thread in case you've stopped checking here.

I co taught a playwriting class in a high school when I was in Seattle through the "Young Playwright's Program". It was awesome. I loved every minute of it.

And don't be intimidated. None of us really have a clue what we're doing. :) I mean, *I* don't. Everyone else probably does. I noticed you're tagging your entries and such. That's what you have on us... you're super familiar with the web. For most of us, it didn't exist when we were kids so you know... we fumble. :)

Go Rhino, go !

Glad to be here, and I know... just a little bit intimidated is all.

Technically it's called "Theatre 2" by my school's counseling department, my theatre teacher refers to it as "Ethnic Drama." Basically we read plays for a good chunk of the time, and then we spend every other month or so writing plays, scenes, and monologues. I actually got in to the class before I should've, because I never took Theatre 1; technically, I shouldn't be in any of the Advanced Theatre classes I'm in because I never took Theatre 1 (mind you, I take Improvisational Comedy, Ethnic Drama, and Drama Production)

But yeah, my Theatre Director (as he also directs our schools productions (Drama Production class)) is the one who's guiding me through the writing process; helping me with formatting and such. Anywho, I do know how lucky it is to have specialized writing courses at my school, especially considering that I've always wanted to go in to writing. :)

you go to a high school that offers a PLAYWRITING CLASS? Thank your lucky stars! Go ahead, I'll wait.

This is super awesome. You have no idea how LUCKY you are. If we had had anything other than creative writing, it would have been a godsend (not that I'm downing creative writing, mind, you, any kind of writing class will be good at any point, but one that specialized? WOW!).

Break a leg!

Well, I've only started writing plays for about a year now... I'm currently talking a Playwrighting class at my High School so this will be my first well-written one. I've written monologues and scenes before though, so I'm hoping to get this done :]

Welcome, Precious. You are the first (I believe) of our young playwrights this year. If there are any others, please HOLLA!

It's wonderful to see you on here, Precious. How long have you been writing plays?
