Greetings from the 2009 Forums Moderator!
My name is Toni Wilson and I go by the handle SolarCircleGirl. I am your Forums Moderator for National Playwriting Month 2009. We're starting up November 1 at the stroke of midnight , and I hope that you will be joining us again this year.
I’d like to introduce myself: I'm 34 years old, I've been a playwright for 10 years, and I've had two plays published by Heuer Publishing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I went to the University of Iowa and graduated in 2005 with a degree in theatre. I live in Conway, Arkansas, with my fiance, Bill, and our three cat-children, Newton, Cheby and Nibbler. I work at a local hospital as a food service supervisor.
Iowa to Arkansas is a bit of a strange trip, and there's an odd story to it. I met Bill on Eharmony and when he got a job in Conway, Arkansas, teaching at Hendrix (he's got a Ph.d in mathematics), I decided to go with him. It's been an adventure moving here after living in the Midwest my whole life, but it's been the best thing I could have done for my writing.
I enjoy the works of Paula Vogel, Nilo Cruz, Noah Haidle ('Mr. Marmalade'), Chekhov, Shakespeare, Karl Capek, Caryl Churchill, Neil LaBute, and Naomi Wallace, among others. I haven't read a lot of her work, but Suzan-Lori Parks has been a huge influence on me. She came to Hendrix and spoke in conjunction with performances of her '365 Days/365 Plays' project. I had just moved here, was completely alone, a stranger in my own country, and I was drowning, creatively and personally. Hearing her speak about her project and being washed over with everything that is just her (and if you've seen her speak, you know what I'm talking about) saved my life. The next day, I wrote a new scene for a new play. And the next. And the next. I did it for four months straight until I was cast in a play and couldn't keep up with it. I came up with enough new material, that, two years later, I am still working on plays from my own personal project.
National Playwriting Month is right around the corner…. If you are going to participate this year, keep an eye out for the forums where there will be a thread to post what you think your piece is going to be. If you have no idea, that’s okay too. Just tell us you’ll be there. You can’t write before November 1st but you can certainly think about your play. Give us details on the play, plot, characters or tell us how you feel about doing Naplwrimo this year…
I am excited for this year in my new role and I can’t wait to see you there and write a play alongside with you.
If you have any questions or need information or clarifications on anything, don't hesitate to contact me.
I look forward to seeing you in November!
Naplwrimo runs on love, sweat and your generous help.
