Emerald City

Description:

Four women have a love/hate relationship with the ever-changing city of Seattle. Each is looking for something, in this urban tale lightly inspired by the Wizard of Oz.

I am not adhering to the plot of the classic children's tale, just letting the story inform the aspirations of my characters:

  • Dot owns a home but questions its value in a rapidly changing landscape
  • Scarlett is writing a dissertation on Duwamish folk tales and makes a startling discovery
  • Tina is desperate for romantic love
  • Lillian is trying to overcome a crippling fear of being alone

In terms of form, the play combines direct address and dialogue scenes. The theme is change and development, not as a positive or negative but as a fact of human life.
