Foreign Surnames
Dear Elizabeth-
I'm trying to add another layer to my characters and have been thinking about their surnames. I'm looking for French or Italian surnames that mean:
mirror, reflection, twin, double, other-self
Please let me know if you can find anything.
Thanks,
Dean

Thanks Elizabeth!
I like Specchio. And Jumeau sounds nice also. All those open vowel sounds are gorgeous.
Those Romance languages sound so melifluous. I guess there's a reason that the majority of the truly great operas are written in primarily in Italian and French. Speaking of French opera, I'm trying to get a rough translation of the following excerpts from "Hippolyte et Aricie" by Rameau. Maybe our resident polyglot can give me a clue:

I broke out my well loved latin dictionary from college (ahhh, i missed you, beat up little book) and the word for mirror...wait for it...wait for it...speculum.
For some reason I'm thinking you won't want to use THAT as a last name.
OO, but Verrier is one, which means person who puts in windows.
Go Rhino, go !
Mirror
Italian = Specchio
French = I haven't found a French equivalent. Miroir doesn't appear to be an actual surname.
Bonus Italian: Vetro = glass ( I just like the sound of it)
Twin
Italian = Gemello
French = Jumeau
Cheers,
Elizabeth
Um. Sorry. Apparently, I can't read and missed the part where you wanted the names to mean a certain thing. OOOOPS !!!!
Jumelin ( close to jumelle for twin) could be one.
I'll have to think of more but don't have any right now.
Go Rhino, go !
"Foreign" is a matter of perspective. :)
I am French .... here are some common French ones :
Dupont, Petit, Leloup, Dubois, Durant, Mercier, Lemoine
If they are aristocratic anything that starts with Le and then another word is good.
Like Le Petit, Le Moine....
Just don't use my last name. :)
Also... what part of France are they from ? that's going to make a difference. I am giving you the smiths of France right now but if you want it to be more region specific, it's another thing.
Here is a list of the 100 most common names in the pyrenees orientales, close to spain .
