My Favourite Playwriting Books
On of my former professor's, playwright Julie Jensen, wrote this neat little book called, "Playwriting: Quick & Dirty." It's like that Strunk & White "Elements of Style" book but for playwriting.
I also like Jeffery Hatcher's "The Art & Craft of Playwriting". A great, very no non-sense playwriting text.
Lastly, Stuart Spencer's "The Playwright's Guidebook."
They are good to look at from time to time to remind you of things you probably already know.

Go Rhino, go !
Yeah, Gary's pretty funny on the page. I imagine he's pretty funny in person.

I have never met Gary, but I do receive The Loop, which is awesome and super useful. You certainly should get on it.

he is also the Director of Creative Affairs (or some such title) for The Dramatists Guild - which everyone on here should be a member of! Gary writes the bi-monthly email newsletters and there is ALWAYS a gem that's helpful to me. i should get on The Loop.
he is also hysterical if you have a chance to meet him or hear him speak in person. he recently went around the country doing a bunch of town-hall meetings with DG members and i got to meet him here in Seattle. he was terrific.
Hey! A friend of mine recently introduced, in a manner of speaking, to Gary Garrison. He maintains a website: www.garygarrison.com
He also puts out a monthly newsletter called "The Loop" filled with great stories and upcoming play festivals and other opportunities.
He also has a great e-book on 10-minute plays and 10-minute play fests called "Perfect 10."

Believe it or not, I've never read a playwriting book. I wonder ig that shows in my work. Hmm...

great idea for a thread, Dean. i always love a good book on writing.
a couple i love more for the business end and generally surviving the life of a writer are Gary Garrison's "Playwright's Survival Guide," and not specific to playwriting but something i read at least once a year is Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life." My copy is loaned out right now and I desperately need to read her chapter on Shitty First Drafts!
