(Carl is David's drag queen college roommate who loves to roll his r's. He is preparing to audition for a university production of Racine's Phedre (and, of course he wants to play Phedre.))

(in an overly affective manner)

Venus I felt in all my feverrrr'd frrrrame,
Whose furrrry had so many of my rrrrace
Purrrrsued. With ferrrrvent vows I sought to shun
Herrrr torrrrments, built and deck'd for herrrr a shrrrrrine,
And therrrre, 'mid countless victims did I seek
The rrrreason I had lost; but all forrrr naught,
No rrrremedy could currrre the wounds of love! [1]

I could hear him there, rolling his rrrrrr's, jumping about flamboyantly.

Not sure if you ever watched "Star Trek: The Next Generation" but I am reminded of an episode where they were talking about Limericks. A couple of the starfleet officers told some classic ones, then Data told this one:

There once was a woman from Venus

Whose body was shaped like a ---

the captain interrupts him and says, "Data," warningly.

Perhaps you had to be there, and perhaps you had to share a home with a total nerd to get the nuance, but I thought I'd share that gem.

Awesome lines. I already get a sense of who Carl is and his relationship with David.
