The Confessions of Dreyfus Moody: A Patriotic Dystopian
I have considered the possibility that writing an entire musical and novel in one month is the epitome of insanity, but I don't care. Here's the synopsis of my naplwrimo project, a musical concerning madness:
An aspiring lawyer has a wonderful life until for no reason whatsoever he is arrested, his family is murdered before his eyes, and he is thrown into prison. He goes insane, and after escaping vows vengeance upon that which he once protected: civilization. He becomes a sociopathic politician, destroying all those who stand in his way, including those who once loved him. In time he is crowned the emperor of a new, dystopian world order, and he challenges God for the right to rule. God says no and damns him to Hell, where we find out the musical is being performed, in Satan's court. In the final number, Dreyfus confesses his sorrow for the loved ones he lost and cast aside, and laments the necessity of his actions...calling all humanity to witness that sin did not defeat him, only madness. Thus he proclaims himself innocent in his guilt, yet guilty in his madness.
I am actually writing the libretto, the lyrics, and all the music, so we'll see how much I can get done this month.

I just read the summary. THAT'S ambitious! I bow before your audacity. :)
Yes, we do see the lawyer's life at the beginning. Yes, we do learn to empathize with Dreyfus to the extent that we are properly shocked at his misfortunes, yet also properly disgusted at what he becomes, still regarding him with a sufficient amount of compassion at his final demise.
P.S. If you look closely at my profile pic, you'll notice that it is actually a promotion pic for the musical, using a Photoshoped picture of my own face.
SERIOUSLY? It sounds awesome and it's bananas ambitious. Go for it!

My hope would be that we see some of the lawyer's life at the beginning, that we (the readers/ audience) become invested in his well being, so that the misfortunes/tragedies will have immense impact as they happen.
