November 2008

Day Fourteen

Anybody? I will write today. I will.

Day Thirteen.

I'm starting to fall behind. Life stuff keeps getting in the way. I haven't touched I'm Always Bored At Parties in a couple of days now. Anybody else?

What we don't know.

I want to direct your attention to the blog of lovely fellow playwright Matt Freeman who has a great post about what he doesn't know about playwriting and story telling.

an icon that changes--what is it? it's keeping me up at night

In the forums, there's a little envelope shaped icon at the left side. Some of the look closed. Some a different color. Some look partically open. What does that mean?

Creative Overload

I'm back! I was temporarily ensconced with a 140 page thesis I was editing for an MBA student (gotta pay the bills somehow) but that is happily in my "sent" items and I plan to devote the rest of November to creativity! (Here's hoping my "bosses" don't read this mail!)

Do you also find that when you're in the habit of writing a lot then you just want to write more, and lots of different things? That's why I like doing Nano and Napl at the same time - when my characters in "12 Steps" don't want to play then I just pop on over to novel land. And vice versa. And then there's the four short stories and two short plays I have to write this month, and this great idea Dael Orlandersmith gave me for a dramatic poetry thing...and don't get me started on my blog. It was just a fun idea, but then it really took off, and now so many people are emailng me about it and I'm just basking in the fun of it all.

I also love to read when I'm writing a lot. Well, ok, I just love to read, but especially when I'm writing! And seeing other plays! I've had a great theatrical month, with Zoo Story, Yellow Man, and this Saturday Gaetan Schmid's Rumpsteak again! It's like a veritable word feast.

So everyone, gather up all the words you can, and then they will overflow onto your pages!

For your completed plays...

Day Eleven.

In addition to NaPlWriMo I've just volunteered to write a ten minute play for Youngblood's December brunch. A draft is due in a week. Geez, I'm an idiot.

Acts? or Scenes? Opinions please.

I've been arguing with myself for the past several days, and it's time to get an opinion that doesn't come from the conflicted voices in my head.

I can't decide if I should break up my play into more Acts...or just more Scenes. Here is a time line of events.

Opening scene...could happen whenever, most likely "now"
Next scene is one week later
Next scene is one year after that
(possibly another scene here a week after this)

Then it jumps four years (I am working on this part now)
(Possibly a scene a week after main scene)

Then five years.
(Possibly a scene a week after main scene)

At first I was 100% CERTAIN that the first group was Act I and the next two were Act II.
Now, I'm not so sure, and I think that maybe it should be Acts II & III.

Voices in my head promise to stop fighting with each other, if voices outside of my head can guide me in the right direction. Is this a 3 Act play? or 2?

 thanks for your opinions.
