November 2008
Day Nineteen.
After writing a third draft of my ten minute play I wrote two measley pages of my NaPlWriMo play last night.
I'm really frustrated. My play is meant to be performed in an apartment and is essentially just two characters talking to the audience the entire time. It's not really about "plot" so much as it is characters and ideas.
In that respect, I'm realizing it's not really a traditional "play" per se and I don't know how to proceed. I'm stilla round thirty pages or so.
Man, this sucks.
Variety
A nice variety is essential, I believe, for keeping in the wrimo game...especially if you're doing both naplwrimo and nanowrimo, as I am. I am currently reading Faust (for my musical), and Walden, which really has nothing to do with my book, except for the emotional quality of the work. I go in more for inspirational music for my work, the majority of which is Josh Groban and Celine Dion...really great for romantic tragedies, as is Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. What the heck, I'm a straight guy and I love Celine Dion, Josh Groban, and the Phantom of the Opera. That's amusing.
Reading Series.
My theater company, The Management, is now accepting scripts for our 2009 salon series. You may find more information here.
See you at the salon!
Day Eighteen.
Anybody?
I wrote a second draft of my ten minute play instead of working on NaPlWriMo. I'm really going to have to get the lead out of my ass is I want to win this thing.
Day Seventeen.
I'm at 32 pages. I finally finished a first draft of the Youngblood play, so i can get back to winning this thing.
Foreign Surnames
Dear Elizabeth-
I'm trying to add another layer to my characters and have been thinking about their surnames. I'm looking for French or Italian surnames that mean:
mirror, reflection, twin, double, other-self
Please let me know if you can find anything.
Thanks,
Dean
How Many Pages Have you Written so Far ?
Two People Tried to Kill me, and Other Excuses
I have had a pathetic week. Absolutely pathetic. Again, life is full of excuses, not least of which are the two maniacs who tried to kill me on my way home today (one threw a rock at my car, the other cut a red light). But really I have just had a pathetic week. And you know what that means, don't you? That means that this coming week I am going to have to KICK ASS! Because I will never give up, I will never surrender. I will write a play this November - who's with me ?!
Rhino Burst # 2: Ten Things that Keep me Writing.
This is the second of our weekly "Rhino Burst *" in which an experienced playwright rallies us to the cause . This week's "call to arms" comes to you from our first 2008 NaPlWriMo winner, Dean Lundquist. Dean completed his first draft a whole 14 days before NaPlWriMo ended. Wow ! I asked Dean for the secrets behind his success, which he generously shares below.
