This Door to Remain Unlocked During Business Hours

(Not a winner, but I wanted scene one to be the placeholder for the work that will be completed because of this year's NaPlWriMo.)

Ada, a worker bee waiting for a cab after working a late night, is surprised by Brian, a guy who noticed her waiting by her office's glass doors. It's after a large snowstorm, and there's little sign of traffic, security guards or other people. Brian begins to see that Ada is all alone -- and she has no way to call for help, nor any way to escape, except past him.

What would a person do to someone else, if he (or she) could get away with it?

Day 30 - The Finish Line !

I don't even care if I won, man, it's 75 pages including the list of characters and it's done. It's actually a play. My head hurts.

To all my fellow playwrights--75 pages or not--I wish you the best! Playwriting is not easy. This is a ball-breaking form. So my hat's off to anyone brave enough to tackle it.

Yay, all of us!

Four women have a love/hate relationship with the ever-changing city of Seattle. Each is looking for something, in this urban tale lightly inspired by the Wizard of Oz.

I am not adhering to the plot of the classic children's tale, just letting the story inform the aspirations of my characters:

Dot owns a home but questions its value in a rapidly changing landscape
Scarlett is writing a dissertation on Duwamish folk tales and makes a startling discovery
Tina is desperate for romantic love
Lillian is trying to overcome a crippling fear of being alone

In terms of form, the play combines direct address and dialogue scenes. The theme is change and development, not as a positive or negative but as a fact of human life.

A girl who is disconnected from her family, a racist father, a passive mother, and an abusive brother, becomes the black sheep of the family when she chooses tolerance over ignorance and is spun through a hectic cycle of drugs, sex, and physical abuse before she has the courage to confront her past.

The time is ripe.

I will not make it to 75 pages. Not even close... Grad school definitely won this year, but I will return next year with a vengeance ! I did write 2 pages last night, so all is not lost and this solo show I am writing will be born, regardless of what happens.

Some of you are very close... Go, go, go... You can do it !!!

I'll be back to talk to you once this thing is over.

Brigid Kildare's Steel Works (Excerpt)

Brigid Kildare has always loved fire. She uses a torch welder to make huge metal sculptures in a garage she shares with an assortment of bikers, who suppose they're a gang and call themselves the Chieftains. Her lifelong best friend is Patrick, a Christian biker who gives a lift to the addicts and prostitutes he finds on the street.

She thinks the major problem in her life is that Patrick and the less than intellectually gifted Meghan have found romance with each other. Not that SHE wants to date Patrick. But it's still very annoying.

One day as they're minding their own business at Kerry's bar, the Chieftains rumble with the Snakes and the wise mentor of the Snakes, Fabian, is nearly killed, allegedly by Patrick, though all of the Chieftains are possible culprits.

Patrick and all the Chieftains are on trial to answer for their faith, their beliefs and their motivations. The Court asks them, "Who are you, really?"

Acting, writing, directing--live

In addition to writing a play (which I finished, BTW), I'm also acting in one at the local community theatre. Christmas Belles opens this week in Houma, LA at Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne.

Oh, and did I mention that I'm directing 4 different plays with my drama classes at the art center where I teach part time? it's been a crazy, busy, over-the-top theatre month.
