October 2008

The Chalk Boy

Beneath its boring façade a Northwest town hides a nasty secret, and the girls from the local high school’s Christian Athletes Club are here to tell you all about it. Murder, the occult, Algebra… this is a deathly black comedy that punches as hard as your high school bully

Copyright Law

So,

I have never really written a play before (started one, but never finished!) but are you able to write a play with a character some one else made up? I was thinking about writing one about Sherlock Holme's and his family, but is this breaking any copyright law?

Who else can't wait ?

I cannot wait. I love October 30th... waiting for the clock to turn to 12:ooam November 1st and starting... Even if it's just a few words. It's so nice to be allowed to start....

Can I *think* about my play?

I know we aren't to start writing our play, but can we think about our play? Bandy about ideas in our heads of form, theme, character, voice and tone?

Sure, silly question. But the web is pretty powerful these days, didn't know if perhaps there was a mechanism here to detect Premature In-Mind Playwriting (PIMP) before the countdown clock reaches go-time.

Help / FAQ

ACCOUNT AND LOGIN PROBLEMS

  •  Ack. I signed up and didn't receive an email confirmation !

Do not panic. Check your spam folder ( especially yahoo and hotmail users) as often the emails get stuck there. If you can't find it there, just email us at info@naplwrimo.org and let us know about the problem. We have a tiny staff so please be patient with us if we don't respond right away.

USER ACCOUNT AND CONTENT

  •  I have 75 pages... now how do I upload my play ?

You need to be logged in to the site to upload your play. After you're logged in, you should see a menu in one of the columns on the right side of the home page. The column should have your user name at the top of it in caps.
It should look something like this :
USER NAME HERE

Click on "Play" and it will take you to the page where you can upload your play. If you already created a page for your play when NaPlWriMo started, just go and edit that page. Once you get to the play creation page ( it should say CREATE PLAY at the top), there will be instructions on how to upload your play. Please read them carefully and follow the instructions. If you are still having trouble , email us and we will help you out.
Note: If you want to post your play for your eyes only and an excerpt of your play to be public, just upload 2 files and email us to let us know which you want public. Easy as pie!
Thank you for your patience as we are working on an easier way to set play securities for future years.
Once your play is uploaded, you can go back to that page at any time and add revisions or delete and reupload a more updated file. You can also change the security level on your play at any time by emailing us.
We kindly ask that you do not upload plays that were not written or completed during NaPlWriMo. If you want to come back and upload an updated edited of a play you wrote during Naplwrimo, you may do so, but please upload a new file for that and mention in the description that this is the post Naplwrimo edits.  Part of the fun is for people to read the work (mess, chaos, what-have-you) that you wrote during Naplwrimo.
Thank you.

PLAYWRITING ( OR PLAYWRIGHTING, both are valid)

  • I really want to do this , but I have no idea where to start !

Go to the forums. There are lots of threads in there that are full of suggestions on jumping off points to writing a play. And remember, no idea is a bad idea. Do you know how many movies and plays are based on the boy meets girl idea ? If you write it, it will be like no one else's play. Trust your instincts!

  • Can I write a screenplay?

Screenplays aren't the same thing and besides, we like Script Frenzy and their event is in April. (You can write another play there too.)

NAPLWRIMO

  • What do I win exactly ?

A full first draft of a play ! A pretty certificate ! New friends !
Isn't that enough ?

  • How do I use the site during Naplwrimo? There is so much information... I'm overwhelmed!

Yeah, we know, we know... but don't panic, you're not doing it wrong. There is no way to do Naplwrimo wrong. The website is there to support you, not overwhelm you,  so use it as you see fit. During Naplwrimo, I like to bookmark the home page and the forums page. These are the 2 pages where new and crucial info gets posted regularly.  If  you check these 2 pages at least once a day you probably won't miss anything.
You can also put the front page in your rss feed reader by clicking the little syndicate icon at the bottom of the 2nd column, there on the right.
If you miss blog posts or rhino bursts posts, you'll be able to see them by going to the 2009 blogs page (look in the main menu navigation, above).
You can easily go to the front page (Home) and back to the forums but using the menu up top and the navigation menu to the right in the second column.
Another nifty page to know about is the "recently posted" page which you can find at this link: http://www.naplwrimo.org/tracker
That page lists all the new content that gets posted to the site, regardless of where it was posted. Its a nice way to check and see what you missed without having to scroll and flip through many pages on the site.

  • I won ! Now what ?

Congratulations ! Now it's time to upload your play so you can be verified as a Naplwrimo winner and get your name in the Hall of Fame ! See instructions on how to upload your play under USER ACCOUNT AND CONTENT.

  • I have a question that's not answered in the FAQ, what do I do?

Email us at info at naplwrimo dot org and ask your question. If your question is good, we'll probably add it to the FAQ and we'll also email you back with a response. Thanks for your contribution !

FORUMS
Specific help related to the Forums is on the Forums How-To page.

The new baby is born.

Ladies and gentlemen, les enfant, rhinos of the world...

Welcome back !

Here we are.... same place, new site.

As you can see NaPlWriMo got a spa treatment. But more importantly, we have a whole new platform to run on. This nifty platform called Drupal allows you to log on once to the site and navigate the entire site as well as forums without ever having to log back in ! In other words, the site is now integrated ! And I started going to graduate school at the California Institute of Integral Studies, so I am all about integration these days...

And... it's not likely to break !!!

I want to thank all of you who responded to our fundraising plea and helped the dream of this new site come true. All your names will soon be listed in a special section in the community area (the Rhino Den we call it).

I am also incredibly grateful to Greg Bear for making it all happen and teaching me how to use the site via Skype. Yes, because he is in Seattle and I am in San Francisco now. It's all so web 2.0 isn't it ?

But...
