October 2008

3 days and counting...

My dear Rhinos...

Did you see how many of you there are already ?

My gosh... I am impressed.

I hope you're finding your way around the site and having some good meeting conversations in the forums. If you haven't met Joshua Conkel yet, you should know that he is your forums moderator rhino extraordinaire and I am so grateful to have his help this year to replace the illustrious Dan Trujillo who did a fantastic job last year.

If you're curious about who all is participating in our 2008 edition, our genius webmaster rhino took care of it and created a fancy participants page: check it out!

I have a whole slew  of cool things in store for you this year...

For your daily reading, be sure to head over to the Naplwrimo aggregator, which is just a fancy word for our best selection of theatre blogs, theatre news blogs and 2008 Naplwrimo Participants blogs. I know you don't need the procrastination but hey.. you never know... these blogs might help you come up with that first line you needed to start !

As we get closer to November 1st, I hope you are dreaming and scheming about your play. If there is a play you never wanted to write or that you are scared of writing, I suggest you do that one. This is why I 've decided I am going to write a solo show. I am terrified ! Aren't solo shows terribly masturbatory and boring most of the time ? YES !!! But mine will be different, right ?! Because I'll write it so fast, i won't even have time to judge it before I write it...  A 75 page solo show ? I AM INSANE. Oh but you already knew that, riiiight.

Oh one more thing, in case you haven't noticed, you can stick NaPlWriMo in your news or rss feeds. Easy as pie : click on the little orange sign below the word SYNDICATE, there in the right side bar. If you don't have a news reader, my personal favorite is Google Reader. ( Damn,  I am not even getting paid to say this !).

I'll be back soon to declare the opening of Naplwrimo 2008. I am trepidating !!!

What does your favorite coffee cup say ? Mine is from the Twin Peaks Diner in Washington. "Damn fine cup of coffee" they say...

no room for cheaters this year?

so, i seem to remember that last year there was a space for people who were participating, but not totally official because they were working on something already started, etc.

have we gotten stricter this year?

i ask because the play i really want to be writing is one i started six months ago, when i wrote about 15 pages. i haven't touched it since, as i've been drowning in a fiction ghostwriting project. actually, i've looked at it a couple times, but been supremely stuck. i think this could be the best way to push through the stickiness and bust out a draft.

MUSIC AS INSPIRATION

This past weekend I had a short play premiere at Ensemble Studio Theatre as part of Youngblood's "Asking 4 Trouble Festival". Each playwright had to draw the name of a song out of a hat to serve as inspiration for a play they would then write in a week.

This worked really well for me. I ended up being really proud of what I wrote, so I thought I'd do it for NaPlWriMo as well. Music is really inspiring me and picking one thing (like a song or a picture or an item) can really help you focus when you have a ton of ideas flying around in your head.

In a post-9/11, post-Katrina world full of the politics of fear and doctrines of intolerance and hate, what are we willing to sacrifice for our own sense of security? What liberties are we willing to give up so we can go to bed at night? Inspired by Sinclair Lewis’ It Can’t Happen Here and commissioned by RTC, As We Speak takes a look at what could happen in an America stripped of her civil liberties.

Mr. Forums!

Hello everybody! November 1st is almost here and I hope you are all as excited as I am. This NaPlWriMo promises to be a doozy! Dorothy Lemoult, founder and goddess of all thing NaPlWriMo related, asked me to introduce myself. My name is Joshua Conkel and I'll be your forums moderator this year. Hi. Hello. There are only two rules to the forums (and they are also posted there) and they are as follows: 1. Be nice. 2. Check in on Sundays. Other than that, have fun! I'll see you in the forums.

Forum Rules

Hello! Welcome to the forums for National Playwriting Month 2008! A couple of ground rules:

1. Don't be a jerk. We're all here to have fun and write a play, so please be respectful of the other writers at all times.

2. Everyone must check-in weekly. The weekly check-in is posted on Sundays here in the forums.

The daily check-in is just to keep you motivated and put you in touch with other playwrights. Though not mandatory, I find that it's really helpful in keeping the writing process going.

That's it, folks! I hope everybody has an amazing time!

Hearts,
Joshua Conkel

Jumping off point?

Does anyone have any good "jumping off points" to share? I'm having trouble deciding what to write about and trying to get myself inspired.

What do you do to get yourself inspired? Start with questions/images/exercises?

introductions?

I hope that this is allowed, if not, it can be deleted. How about a round of introductions?

My name is Toni. I'm located in Conway, Ar. I work at a hospital during the day and am in school for my certified dietary management certificate. I also do roller derby.

I've been a playwright for eight years. I really enjoy Paula Vogel, Shakespeare, Tony Kushner, David Henry Hwang, Anna Devere Smith, Suzan-Lori Parks....the list goes on forever.

Hello to everyone out there. I am looking forward to spending the next month with you all working on my play. :)

Good Musical Writer Communities?

Though I'm not doing a musical for NaPlWriMo, I've been looking for a good community of librettists, lyricists, and composers. If anyone knows of some, please post them. I'm really appreciative, I've been looking for so long and just haven't found one yet.
